Background
Full name: Vaelrik Stormveil. Grew up in a Tideborn enclave near Upper Vi, where people treated him more like a tool than a neighbor. The military recruited him young for his strength and pushed him into frontline work — border patrols, raids, and "order enforcement." He followed orders because that was all he knew.
During a patrol near Lower Vi, his unit tried to detain a Tideborn caravan on a false charge. The people were unarmed and scared, and Vaelrik couldn't bring himself to carry out the order. He stepped between the soldiers and the caravan and let the families escape. His unit reported him for insubordination.
He was stripped of rank and equipment and pushed out with nothing but a broken insignia. With no purpose left, he wandered until he reached [[Calen Vara]], where the priests treated him like a man instead of a weapon. For the first time, he was asked what he believed in, not what he could break.
He stayed, studied, and eventually took up cleric training under Kord. He still fights like a soldier, but now he chooses who he protects and why.
Rynna reached out to him and brought him back to Vi. He owes her a great deal.
Session History
Disappeared into shadow as the Stillforge boarded. Moved unseen to the satyr family's side and locked the guard's arm from behind when Pippen was dangled over the rail. After the chaos on the dock, introduced himself to Bodrin and Brixton, shaking hands. "To my friends — Vael. And anyone willing to stick up for the Tideborn, I consider friends."
Helped haul Silas up after the collapse. On old instinct, gave Areska a soldier's salute when she arrived; when she asked if he was former guard, admitted: "Old habits." Asked her directly about Rynna — his reason for returning. Areska's brows lifted: "Rynna has spoken very highly of you. I wouldn't be able to do my job without her."
During the group's sharing, spoke with weight about being born in Vi-Upper, joining the guard, and serving in the East Ring "where the city's cruelty was hardest to ignore." He'd seen what power did to the powerless. He'd left, found faith and Kord, and then Rynna reached out — "pulling him home like a hook in the ribs."
Received a crow-delivered scroll while sleeping. It read: "Heard you in town. Thank you for responding. I will be with Areska tomorrow." A crude drawing at the bottom: a chain link, broken in half. Rynna. Outside Honeybrookes, clutched a hostile flyer and breathed: "There's a mob out there." Pressed mending magic into the broken window — sealing it piece by piece as if he could stitch reality back together through sheer will.
During the walk through Vi-Upper, felt the subtle anti-Tideborn reactions directed at him and Prill. At The Unloading Bay, saw Rynna across the room — rose-gold scaled, all contained intensity. She crossed to greet him "like an old friend returned from too long away."
Created a street-side commotion near Blackmire Tannery to keep Harlan's attention from turning at the wrong moment, covering the upstairs infiltration. Acted as lookout while Bodrin boosted Prill to the balcony.
Reached the cellar through Brixton's magical Darkness and immediately wrapped him in Shield of Faith. Fought alongside Brixton in the half-light beyond the spell's edge. Kept Brixton in the fight when he was dropped to 0 HP.
Recognized the bundled vial-device as a bomb from his old guard training. When the saboteur lit the fuse, he made "the faster choice" — sprinted across the room, snatched it up, and threw it back. The bomb struck the remaining guard in the chest. The whole corner vanished in fire. After the combat, his closer look at a side room revealed loose floor tiles; he disarmed a poison-gas trap "with the cautious precision of someone who had once learned the lesson the hard way."
Walking back through Vi-Upper after the Blackmire Tannery fight, Vaelrik collapsed mid-stride and was taken into a vision: a storm-lashed mountain, a colossal storm-roc descending from a sky split by lightning — Kord himself.
Kord named him champion. He warned that old powers are moving in Eska and the balance once preserved is draining away. He revealed the existence of the Six Gifts of the Pure Three: two from Moradin, two from Melora, two from Kord. Those gifts are lost, hidden, guarded, or forgotten. One path has already begun to open — and it lies within Vaelrik's own company, whether the others understand it yet or not.
He charged Vaelrik to find, awaken, and protect the Six Gifts before they can be turned toward harm. His words were not gentle: Vaelrik will not walk alone, but he will need to be strong enough to carry the storm when others cannot rise.
After the vision, a storm-emblem appeared on Vaelrik's shield, and six weapon-signs were etched into the inner strap: a maul, net, blade, crossed hand-crossbows, javelin, and whip — one for each gift. Bodrin noticed the change and said nothing.
